Dr. Ann Lystrup

Medical Director

Dr. Ann Lystrup is a veterinarian at Hillcrest Animal Hospital. She obtained her BS degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Following graduation, Dr. Lystrup worked in Sun Valley, Idaho where she did mostly small animal work with a little equine thrown in. She returned to Wisconsin to work at a small animal referral clinic in Green Bay.

After four years in Green Bay, Dr. Lystrup returned to her hometown of Eau Claire, WI to work at a small animal practice. In 2000, she started working at the Animal Emergency and Referral Clinic in Oakdale. In 2008, she decided she needed some more normal hours, so she started working at Hillcrest.

Outside of the veterinary field, she enjoys spending time with family, including her husband Brian and her two daughters, and their lab mix pups Koa and Nala. Dr. Lystrup also enjoys skiing, scuba diving, many other sports, outdoor activities, and rooting on the Packers and Badgers.

Dr. Max Farmer

Dr. Max Farmer graduated from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018. Following graduation, Dr. Farmer moved north to be with his fiancé and started practicing in southeast Minnesota focusing on small animal medicine for 3 years. He has a particular interest in nutrition, giant breed dog medicine, and both dentistry & soft tissue surgery.

In his free time, he enjoys working on his novels, and spending time with his wife, son, and newborn daughter. On the weekends he can also be found rooting on Mississippi State sports, and the Green Bay Packers!

Dr. Wes Oltman

Dr. Wes Oltman graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in
2019. He spent 2 years practicing at a mixed animal clinic in Morris, Minnesota before moving
east to the Twin Cities area in 2021. Since then, he has worked exclusively in companion animal
medicine and joined the Hillcrest family in 2023. Some of Dr. Oltman’s favorite areas of medicine are dermatology, dentistry, and surgery.

Dr. Miles Barber grew up in rural northeast Kansas where he developed a love for animals and was exposed to the many opportunities in veterinary medicine. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana and returned to Kansas to attend veterinary school at Kansas State University, graduating in 2019. Having spent the last four years in rural mixed animal practice working on everything from rabbits to yaks, Dr. Barber is excited to focus specifically on companion animal general practice.

Dr. Barber enjoys spending his free time with his wife Erin, their two sons, and daughter.

Dr. Julia Hartmann

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Julia Hartmann earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota in May 2025. A Twin Cities native, she has spent most of her life and education in Minnesota, including gaining valuable experience working in a family practice after undergrad and in an emergency clinic during vet school. Dr. Hartmann is excited to be crossing the St. Croix River to join the Hillcrest team and looks forward to building relationships with the pets and people of the Hudson community.

Dr. Hartmann enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, with special interests in internal medicine, pathology, cytology, feline medicine, and senior pet care. She is especially passionate about making veterinary visits more comfortable and less stressful for cats.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Hartmann enjoys spending time outdoors—gardening, biking, hiking, camping, and skiing. She also loves cooking and traveling with her partner, dabbling in arts and crafts, and doting on her two cats: Misha, a big orange boy, and Cleo, a petite tuxedo girl.
